Masjid e Quba is one place in Madinah that every Muslim visiting the city after performing Umrah or Hajj surely visits. It is the first mosque and its foundation was laid by the Holy Prophet (PBUH). A visit to Masjid e Quba is often included in most of the all-inclusive Umrah packages currently offered in the market. If you are planning to go for your first Umrah anytime soon and want to visit Masjid e Quba, then
this read is a must for you. We have provided all the information about the mosque in our detailed guide that the first-time Umrah pilgrims must know. So, let’s explore Masjid e Quba without any delays.
Spiritual and Religious Significance of Masjid e Quba
The fact that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) himself placed the first brick of Masjid e Quba is enough to establish its significance for Muslims.
However, there is a lot more to it.
Umrah Rewards for Praying Nafals
Pilgrims that pray two Rakats of Nafal in this mosque get a reward equal to Umrah. However, this doesn’t mean that it can replace Umrah. Umrah has its virtues which no other worship can provide.
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) always took out some time to go to this mosque and offer two rakat of Nafila there.
The importance of Masjid e Quba has been mentioned in many of his Hadiths. A couple of them are given below for your reference.
“Whoever purifies himself in his house and then comes to the Mosque of Quba and prays two rak’ahs will have the reward equivalent to performing the minor pilgrimage (Umrah).”
“Whoever performs ablution properly and then comes to Masjid Quba with no other intention but to pray four units, reciting Surah al-Fatiha in each unit, will receive the reward of a person who comes to the House of Allah to perform Umrah.”
The above two hadiths amply show the importance of Masjid e Quba for the first-time pilgrims. By following the two directions given above, they can maximize their Umrah rewards and seek maximum blessings from Allah.
A Mention in the Quran
During the Holy Prophet's (PBUH) time in Madinah, a lot of infidels tried to bring him down. However, a group of people from Makkah accepted Islam with the malicious intent of harming the Muslims and giving their news to the Quraish of Makkah. Allah told His Prophet (PBUH) about the bad intentions of these people. They even built a mosque to achieve their goal of hurting the Prophet (PBUH) and the followers.
At this time, Allah revealed an Ayat of Surah Tawbah to the prophet. It is mentioned below:
“There are also those (hypocrites) who set up a mosque (only) to cause harm, promote disbelief, divide the believers, and as a base for those who had previously fought against Allah and His Messenger. They will definitely swear, “We intended nothing but good,” but Allah bears witness that they are surely liars. Do not (O Prophet) ever pray in it. Certainly, a mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy of your prayers. In it are men who love to be purified. And Allah loves those who purify themselves.”
The first part of the verse refers to Masjid al Dirar and Allah clearly explains the intentions of the hypocrites. He also ordered the Prophet (PBUH) to not enter the premises of this mosque. At the
later part of the verse, Allah mentions Masjid e Quba as the mosque built on the first day is more worthy.

As far as the history of this mosque is concerned, it was built in 622 CE. When the Holy Prophet (PBUH) reached near Madinah, he stayed at the home of Kulthum ibn al Hadm for 10 days and then the work was started. He worked alongside his companions from both the Ansars and
Muhajirs.
The Original Structure
During that time, mud bricks were used to construct homes and almost every other structure.
Masjid e Quba’s initial structure consisted of raw bricks and leaves from date trees. This represented the simplicity that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) always taught. Once the mosque was
completed, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) led the first prayer while facing Jerusalem as the Qibla was there at the time.
The Current Structure
Its white-colored minarets and domes are a peaceful sight for the pilgrims to observe. It has a total capacity of 22000 worshippers but the most crowded times are those of Hajj and Ramadan. The first renovation and expansion were made during the time of the third caliph, Usman. However, the biggest changes were made during the Saudi Arabian rule. King Fahad, in 1984 gave
orders for expansion, renovations and reconstruction of several parts. The mosque’s area was almost quadrupled and new minarets were also added.
